Which eBay Approach is Right for You
Written by Oliver Goehler Wednesday, 25 August 2010
Dear Reader,
I often get asked how to start on eBay...and most people ask the same question. "I just want to get some hot products and resell them. Where would I get these products?" Now, that's a good question - in a way. But there are actually several different 'approaches' people can take when they are starting out on eBay. And not all of them involve just finding a place to get 'hot products'. For example - there are two 'other' approaches you could take, and they may be far easier to get started with than the 'approach' most people want to take (which usually involves trying to source hot and in-demand BRANDED products). Your other options are:
1) Buying items which are rare/unique/novel (or even branded) on eBay and other sites, to quickly 'flip' and resell. Buying used and selling used.2) Sourcing unique products which no-one else has, and which aren't necessarily 'branded', and reselling those on autopilot.
The first approach is great for 'part-timers' and will probably always be valid. Go for those niche markets where there are lax sellers who are likely to list incorrectly. Then buy and 'flip' those items on for pwofit. The second approach...Let's say that we are going to sell a UNIQUE product into the SNORING market. I want to empahasise that this is FAR FROM the only example...just one. I've chosen this market because I know it's 'hot'. It's 'hot' because it's paying out for other eBayers who are successfully selling into this market. Now, we need our own product for this market. A UNIQUE one. Not a branded one. Where do we find it? Well, since it's unique, we've got a few options.
1) Check WEBSITES (here, or anywhere in the World) which ALREADY sell such a product; from there, we could try and get the website to come in with us, where we basically take-over the eBay.co.uk rights to this product.
2) Do a deal with a USA eBay seller. This is technique I basically INVENTED a while back. I'm talking about going to a US seller of a unique product. Consider the benefits: it already sells well on eBay (just not on the .co.uk site). It's a win-win for everyone concerned. I would give an example here...except if I do, a poor American seller may be besieged by this time tomorrow with emails!
3) Find a product purely off our own back, or get it manufactured for us. This isn't as hard as you might think. A product like the following wouldn't be hard to get in small quantities from a manufacturer (www.applegate.co.uk features some UK manufacturers as a start point). Ideally, we want a product which is a little bit to what's already on offer, but hits right at the core problem of this market. Of course, we are still not there...because selling and marketing your product is arguably the most important thing...and I'll look at that tomorrow.
Until Next Time - Kommando over and out...
Best Regards,
Oliver Goehler

Avoiding the 'No-profit' Zone
I'm reading a book at the moment - an older one which I bought some time ago. I kind of 'glanced' at it when I first bought it, but as is usual with these things, I then usually go back and have another look (often about 6 years later). So, this one is called "The Profit Zone: How Strategic Business Design Will Lead You To Tomorrow's Profits" by a guy called Adrian Slywotzky. And although it focuses more on 'big' companies (such as Intel, Microsoft and Disney, amongst others), there are some good 'lessons' for everyone in here...including eBayers! Anyway - in the section on 'Intel', the author looks at how Intel has risen to become the World's #1 chip-maker. It starts decades ago...in fact, interestingly enough, back in the late 70's, Intel didn't make processors for PC's (like it does now) - it focused on making 'DRAM'...that's memory for PCs. What happened? Well, because of the (DRAM) market's huge growth, tons of competitors (mostly Japanese) jumped along for the ride. Eventually, that meant profits got watered down for everyone. Intel was faced with a problem: continue making sub-par profits in 'DRAM', or consider its alternatives. It decided to focus on processors instead - which, at the time, was a HUGE change for them. After all, they were memory-makers!
Visit a Trade Show
Next week I won't be here that much - although I'll still be writing you my daily email message. So, where will I be? I'm visiting a trade-show...not for the first time, and I don't think it will be my last either. If you've already started your eBay business, or are looking to start one, then they can be well worth a visit. Why? Simply because you'll find them 'chock' full of suppliers who can provide you with profitable products to resell. Whatever the niche. Sure, not every supplier will exhibit at trade-shows - but plenty do. This is ideal if you're looking at a certain niche. Let's say you're interested in selling beauty type products on eBay and online. Then there's a trade-show for that 'niche' (as for practically any other).
